Jakarta (ANTARA) – Instagram will require users to confirm their birthday as part of efforts to create new security features for young people.
Quoted from Reuters on Tuesday, Instagram has been exploring making a version of the application for children under 13 years. However, lawmakers are pressing for scrapping the plan because Facebook, the owner of Instagram, has a serious record of failing to protect children on their platform.
Instagram said it would use the birthday information to ensure their app provides an age-appropriate experience for users.
Last month, Instagram said that accounts belonging to users under 16 would immediately be set as private when they first joined.
Then, Instagram will ask the user’s birthday when opening the app and display some pop-up if not enter date of birth.
At certain times, users are also asked to confirm their date of birth in order to continue using Instagram.
Instagram added that it was aware of the possibility of users entering fake birth dates so they are currently developing new technology to address the issue.
