The last U.S. troops remaining in Afghanistan are expected to be withdrawn as scheduled on Tuesday, August 31, U.S. Secretary of Defense John Curby said on Monday.
Curby did not provide details on how long the departure from Kabul Airport would be completed.
The last withdrawal of US troops will mark the end of a 20-year US military mission in Afghanistan.
The remaining commanders in Afghanistan continue to liaise with Taliban officials to ensure a smooth departure from the airport after two chaotic weeks of US and foreign troops working to remove their citizens and Allied Afghans.
A total of more than 122,000 people, including 5,400 U.S. citizens, have been evacuated by Monday, the Pentagon said.
“The evacuation continued over the weekend and today. Yesterday, 26 US military aircraft, all C-17s, flew with about 1,200 evacuees, “Major General Hank Taylor told reporters.
“Operations in Afghanistan will be completed soon,” he said.
Most countries have completed their operations at the airport. In addition to 26 US planes, only two other planes flew during the day
With the withdrawal of the US and other foreign military contingents from Afghanistan, the Taliban launched a general offensive operation this month and quickly seized almost the entire territory of the country, but on August 15, Kabul fell into their hands.-
Taliban control alone has not come under Taliban control, where Taliban opponents have established a center of resistance to the radical Islamist regime.
