GTS operator: RF dictates gas supply terms

The Kremlin uses divide and rule

The Kremlin will not reckon with the costs for the sake of depriving Ukraine of transit and increasing political and military pressure, Sergei Makogon is sure.

The new gas contract between Hungary and Gazprom bypassing the territory of Ukraine is aimed at increasing pressure on Ukraine. This is an example of how Gazprom dictates the terms of gas supply, stated Head of the Ukrainian GTS Operator Serhiy Makogon.

“Instead of the direct route RF-Ukraine-Hungary, which has been supplying gas to Hungary without interruption for decades, now gas will go along the route RF-Turkey-Bulgaria-Serbia-Hungary much longer,” Makogon emphasized.

According to him, gas supplied to Hungarian consumers via this route cannot be cheaper than Ukrainian gas, “but Gazprom successfully hides transportation costs in the final gas price.”

The head of the GTS Operator believes that Moscow will not reckon with the costs for the sake of its goal – depriving Ukraine of transit and increasing political and military pressure.

“The correct decision for the EU would be to force Gazprom to sell gas at the borders of the Energy Community so that European traders can independently choose routes for further transportation. Now the Kremlin continues to use the divide and rule principle,” Makogon said.

Makogon explained why Ukraine will keep transit

We will remind, on August 30, Hungary concluded with the Russian Federation 15-year gas supply contract… 3.5 billion cubic meters m of “blue fuel” will be supplied through Serbia, and one billion – through Austria.
