Tesla autopilot and emergency – system “has a weakness” on special signal lights

The US traffic safety agency NHTSA has launched an investigation into 11 accidents in which Tesla electric vehicles collided with or caused firefighting, rescue or police vehicles in the vicinity of these special services.

Accidents with Tesla electric cars with an activated autonomous driving system, called the manufacturer’s Autopilot, have been reported several times in recent years. It is assumed that the system could be deceived by spectral blue signal lights or flashes, especially in the dark. Signs with digital directional arrows and illuminated traffic cones could also play a role, Bloomberg reports, citing NHTSA information. It is known that 17 people have been injured in various accidents so far, one person has died.

The US traffic safety agency NHTSA does not allow manufacturers to relax and tirelessly monitors the situation in the car market, demanding changes in car design as soon as any violations or deviations from the norm are detected.

NHTSA has already investigated fatal accidents involving the Tesla autopilot, as well as fatal fire accidents involving an electric car manufacturer.

Tesla has since modified the batteries in some of its models with software updates to provide greater fire safety, but has so far refused to replace the batteries, unlike Hyundai, which is doing so or will do so for a total of more than 80,000 electric cars of its brand.
