Covid-19 can trigger a cytokine storm in the body. Cytokine storm can make the sufferer experience a critical condition to the risk of causing death.
The Covid-19 cytokine storm can happen to anyone. However, this condition is more susceptible to people who are elderly or elderly.
Internal medicine specialist Ceva Wicaksono said Covid-19 sufferers who have entered the age of 55 years and above should be wary of cytokine storms.
“A lot of this happens at the age of 55 to 65 years, even higher. Therefore, we can always anticipate elderly patients. Why are older people more susceptible to cytokine storms?
According to Ceva, this can happen because the immune response in a person’s body as they get older, decreases. An altered or exaggerated immune response in response to a virus causes a cytokine storm.
Cytokine storms occur when the body no longer understands how much to produce cytokines to fight viruses that enter the body.
“And this is what leads to a cytokine storm. For example, the virus is in the lungs, so the immune system attacks the lungs excessively. The immune response when you are an adult also tends to be different from the immune response when you are young,” said Ceva.
Ceva said that until now the medical world has not been able to find out what causes the cytokine storm. However, the possibility of age being one of the main causes of this condition.
“The older people are, the more likely there is a cytokine storm. We can anticipate it in elderly patients. The risk of a large cytokine storm may be caused by our immune cells to regulate the immune response more chaotic,” he said.
Regarding factors due to other diseases in the body or known as comorbidities, it is not yet certain to be the cause of cytokine storms.
However, when a person has comorbidities, the cytokine storm that occurs in the human body can exacerbate the disease.
