San Juan, Aug 29 (EFE) .- Bahamas surpassed the record since the start of the pandemic, in March 2020, of 3,000 infections by covid-19 in a month, as reported this Sunday by the health authorities of the Atlantic archipelago, a days still from the end of August.
October 2020 remained until August as the month with the most infections by the coronavirus, with a total of 2,612 cases, during the peak of the considered second wave of the virus in the Bahamas.
The total number of infections so far this month stands at 3,020, a figure that has set off alarms among the health authorities of the Atlantic archipelago.
Deaths from covid-19 so far in August have risen to 63, bringing the total number since the start of the pandemic to 354, with 17,940 infections.
Most of the latest infections and deaths have been concentrated on the island of New Providence, where the capital, Nassau, is located, specifically 96% of deaths.
Hospitalizations also increased and currently stand at 170.
The Bahamas Department of Health reacted to these figures to alert the public that preventive measures must be intensified to avoid a worsening of the already complicated current situation.
In addition to the island of New Providence, so far this month there have been cases in Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera, among others.
However, there were no cases of contagion on several remote islands this month, including Inagua, Acklins, Crooked and Ragged.
Regarding vaccination, as of this Sunday 14% of its nearly 400,000 inhabitants were fully vaccinated.
The Bahamas authorities fear that this increase in infections will be seriously exacerbated in the coming days as the date of the general elections approaches, scheduled for September 16.
The government and health officials have repeatedly asked the population to get vaccinated, noting that hospitalizations and deaths have been exclusively among the unvaccinated. EFE
