MÉRIDA, Yucatán.- Until last Saturday the 14th they have been confirmed in Yucatan 19 cervical cancer cases (CACU), according to figures the Federal Health Secretariat. In 2020, the entity reported 26 cases. The figure is less than the 81 confirmed cases in 2019.
Specialists point out that due to the hospital reconversion due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the detection of this type of tumors stopped and there could be more patients with the condition without diagnosis and, consequently, without treatment.
Given this scenario and in order to increase the timely detection of this disease and that patients receive timely treatment that can save their lives, the Urban Health Center of Mérida (CSUM), attached to the Ministry of Health of Yucatán ( SSY), carries out a campaign for the prevention of cancer in women and invites them to undergo their Pap smear and mammography tests, to those who require it.
This cancer is the second most lethal in Yucatecan women, only surpassed by breast cancer. Each year, the entity records an average of 90 deaths due to malignant tumors in the cervix.
Using a Pap test, cells scraped from the opening of the cervix are examined under a microscope. The cervix is the lowest part of the uterus (womb) that empties into the upper part of the vagina.
Most cervical cancers can be found early if a woman has routine Pap tests. These screenings should start at the age of 21 or from the start of sexual life.
These days, at the CSUM there is a mobile unit for cervical cancer detection tests free of charge to all women who request it. The female staff who perform these tests are highly trained (one of them has even won a national award).
It was reported that the requirements to be able to take the test are:
– Not be on your menstrual period or seven days have passed since your last day of bleeding; not having had sex in the past 48 to 72 hours
– Not having douches in a period of 48 hours before
– Not having applied any vaginal medical treatment (ovules or creams) during the last two days.
Women interested in taking the test can go to the Urban Health Center, located on Calle 67 by 50 in the Center of Mérida (one block from the Church of San Cristóbal), from Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. 12:00 noon and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
