Why has the price dropped
According to experts, watermelon producers are extremely confused, because qins on them every week fall a record… However, today the average wholesale price for a quality watermelon in the production regions of Ukraine does not exceed 80 kopecks / kg, which corresponds to three US cents.
In addition, the corresponding price is more than three times less than on the same date of 2020
The watermelon season this year began with a two-week delay in relation to the long-term average, and the starting prices for it were significantly higher than usual. As early as July 16, 2021, watermelon was sold in bulk at UAH 12 / kg (45 US cents). However, since the beginning of the season, that is, in just six weeks, the wholesale price for watermelon in Ukraine has collapsed 15 times at once.
Also, given the later than usual start of the season, the supply of watermelon on the market may continue to grow for at least two more weeks, which could have an even more detrimental effect on prices. Farmers say that collecting it will become simply unprofitable.
