The Supreme Court of Brazil will judge on Thursday urgent appeals demanding the suspension of the organization of the Copa America in this country hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, AFP learned on Tuesday, from a judicial source.

Supreme Court President Luiz Fux has ruled that the 11 judges should rule urgently due to the “exceptional” nature of the appeal, with the highly controversial tournament kicking off on Sunday.

For the moment, the boycott of Brazil is ruled out

This judgment will take place in a “virtual” way, without debate between the magistrates, who will send their written votes in turn, Thursday, from 00:00 to 23:59. The two appeals that will be analyzed were filed by a deputy from the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and by a union, the National Confederation of Metallurgists.

Eight days ago, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) announced to everyone’s surprise that Brazil would host this tournament after the withdrawals of Argentina and Colombia, very affected by the Covid-19, the Colombia is also affected by social unrest. Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro did not hesitate to immediately accept this request, triggering an avalanche of criticism.
