Since the arrival of Ali Abdi more than a month ago, Stade Malherbe Caen is still waiting for the two recruits who must allow him to complete his transfer window. The positions sought are known: the central defense and the wings. Some names have also been revealed, whether it is Dunkirk Ibrahim Cissé or Strasbourg Mehdi Chahiri. But for many weeks now, Malherbe has stumbled over open files. Four days before the end of the transfer window, only two players have been recruited. For Stéphane Moulin, there is no doubt: it is not enough.
“Less money in football”
In this sense, the position of the Caen coach is widely shared. ” There is nothing to worry about on the subject, he said. Everyone is well aware – the president, the sporting director – that we need people, but it is not an easy time because there is less and less money in football. We’ve all been working for a long time to build the best possible team. The absences of the moment, numerous on the offensive front, underline the urgency of the situation.
I consider that the workforce must be reinforced, otherwise what we saw in Ajaccio may happen. A workforce that is too short in quantity and quality forces you, at a given moment, to make the choice to preserve. When we preserve, it is difficult to achieve a performance.
No internal problem
There is no reproach in Stéphane Moulin’s message. “I’m not worried because I know it’s working,” he says. We are on the same wavelength. But when you have resources that are not extensible, it is difficult to bring added value to the team. Almost all players are under contract, and when a player is under contract, it has value, however minimal. However, we know that Caen is in a strong logic of budgetary restriction.
One of the objectives this year was to reduce the payroll, to save money because a lot of expenses were made before. I knew it.
A “difficult equation to solve”
The former Angevin found in Caen the painting that had been presented to him. Nevertheless, he is confronted with “a difficult equation to solve”: “to obtain good results with a group which needs to be fleshed out and where it is necessary to do with the economic situation”. Facing Nîmes, this Saturday, August 28, 2021, Stéphane Moulin will be entitled to the paroxysm (a priori!) Of this delicate operation. After that, there will be three full days to move the lines in terms of recruitment. The Norman coach displays unfeigned confidence.
I think we’ll have some good news by midnight Tuesday. I know it can end on the bell. We have a very good president in there. It has happened to us many times (in Angers) and I do not see why it would not be the case again this time.
To save himself a few more gray hairs, Stéphane Moulin would not be against a little less stressful timing from Olivier Pickeu and Yohan Eudeline, his sporting director. But only one thing really matters on arrival: that the reception of Pau, Saturday September 11, 2021, is prepared with a workforce worthy of a solid Ligue 2 club.
