Italian airline Alitalia has announced that it will be shutting down all flights for good starting October 15, 2021. This is because its business is no longer able to withstand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alitalia had struggled to find investors to save herself from bankruptcy. Unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic halted flights for months and made the airline even more of a crisis.
“Alitalia will cease operations completely by the end of the year,” wrote Euronewstravel.
In 2019, Alitalia had existed by transporting 21.3 million passengers to 81 different destinations with 3,600 flights every week. Currently, the company is known to employ more than 10,000 staff.
The Italian government is said to be guaranteeing passengers who have booked flights. The state agrees to a bailout deal, freeing up new debt by expropriating assets.
As a result of this incident, passengers can choose two options, whether to change flights before October 15 or receive full compensation.
Alitalia itself will be replaced by Italia Trasporto Aero (ITA) which will sell tickets as of August 26. The new airline will start flying October 15.
Italy’s civil authorities have given the green light. As many as 2,500 Alitalia workers are said to be getting jobs at the new airline.
