The director of The Adam Project, Shawn Levy, reveals that the Ryan Reynolds-directed sci-fi adventure will hit Netflix in early 2022. The film stars Reynolds as Adam, a man who travels back in time to befriend his 12-year-old self and get his help to cope with his late father. Along with Reynolds, the film’s cast includes Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo like Adam’s parents, Walker Scobell like a young Adam, Catherine Keener, Zoe Saldana and Alex Mallari Jr.
The development of The Adam Project began in October 2012, when the script, written by T.S. Nowlin and originally titled Our Name Is Adam, was chosen by Tom Cruise to star in the film. Paramount Pictures He subsequently entered into talks with Cruise for the film, though after being locked up he would eventually be revived on Netflix with Reynolds and Levy attached. Production on The Adam Project got underway in Canada in November 2020 and officially ended in March and it now looks like the film is on its way to hitting audiences soon.
While chatting with Collider for the launch of your first pairing Free Guy, Levy opened up about his and Reynolds’ upcoming film, The Adam Project. In addition to confirming that a trailer will arrive this year, Levy revealed that the film will premiere in “The first quarter of next year” and opened up about the influences for the film.
«[Ryan y yo] we are very excited about this one. Obviously there’s a ton of action and really all the things we want from a time travel adventure movie, but ultimately it’s very descendant of Frequency and Field of Dreams. And the fun is very Back to the Future inspired, but the heart is more Frequency and Field of Dreams. Because imagine that you could go and have empathy with your parents now that you know what you know as an adult. Imagine you could say to your child self, “Hey, buddy, you’re going to be fine. You will be fine’. It literally gives me goosebumps because this is a fundamental human journey. And this script by Jonathan Tropper builds on that longing, but in the container of a big-budget action adventure. “
With production on The Adam Project ending in March, the time is ripe for the film to hit the streaming platform sometime next year, especially considering that Reynolds’ Netflix project Red Notice is coming. in November. Although the story is reminiscent of Back to the Future, it is interesting to see that Levy also points to Frequency as a key source of inspiration for the film. Despite being a success at its premiere in 2000 and having led to a television adaptation, the science fiction drama directed by Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel has fallen into oblivion or gone unnoticed by many, but the The film remains a poignant and intriguing twist on the time travel format, making it a strong benchmark for Reynolds’ film.
The union of Levy and Reynolds was an interesting draw for fans of both when they were asked to work together on Free Guy, although curiosity increased when they signed for The Adam Project before the release of the other film. The anticipation was even higher with the release of Free Guy this month, as both critics and audiences praised the film and it became a box office success with more than 115 million dollars raised so far against its estimated budget of 125 millions. Only time will tell when audiences will be able to see the film and whether it will exceed the bar that Levy and Reynolds set with their poignant video game comedy.
