A relatively large number of young people are not vaccinated because of a fear of injection. The GGDs are concerned about this, it reports AD. The young people are therefore now being offered extra guidance, in the hope that they will still get the injection.
“Now that mainly young people are being vaccinated, we are seeing more cases of severe needlestick anxiety at our injection locations. We also see that fainting is now more common,” doctor Esther van Puffelen told the newspaper. She is medical coordinator at the injection locations of GGD Zuid-Holland Zuid and sees “several cases per day”.
No appointment
In addition to the cases of injection fear at the vaccination sites, there is also the group that does not make an appointment at all out of fear. The GGDs are most concerned about this group. Van Puffelen: “There are also people who are so afraid of needles that they don’t make a prick appointment at all. It is a great shame if fear prevents people who do want to be vaccinated from doing so.”
About 20 percent of adults have some form of needlestick fear, the GGDs estimate. This percentage is even higher among young people, according to both scientific research as from the experiences of the GGDs.
