Jakarta –
a asteroid which is twice the size of the City of London landmark, Big Ben, is expected to enter orbit Earth this week.
According to the Daily Star report, the United States Space Agency (NASA) is tracking the asteroid that was given to PT. The space rock will appear on August 29.
The asteroid has a diameter of between 110 and 240 meters. While the Big Ben clock tower is at an altitude of 96 meters.
The space rock is moving at more than 25,749 kilometers per hour but will pass Earth at a distance of more than four million kilometers.
So don’t worry, this will not be like the Armageddon movie scene. Because the rock will cross Earth’s orbit within a safe distance.
Previously NASA had also detected another asteroid named 2011 UC292.
The asteroid has a smaller diameter of 73 to 160 meters but is moving at a faster speed of 30,743 kilometers per hour.
However, the asteroid crossed Earth at a safe distance of more than three million kilometers on August 24.
In a recent study, scientists believe they are getting closer to identifying the origin of the asteroid that wiped out dinosaur.
Since the late 1970s, researchers have believed the space rock landed near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
The asteroid hit Earth at over 67,000 mph, forming the 93-mile-wide Chicxulub impact crater.
The space rock itself was completely destroyed by the impact but left behind a layer of iridium-rich clay at the boundary between the Cretaceous and Paleogene, 66 million years ago.
Iridium itself is a rare metal on Earth. This metal is abundant on asteroids.
Research by scientists from the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, suggests that the killer object was almost certainly a giant dark primitive space rock from the outermost part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
They are called dark asteroids because their chemical composition makes them almost invisible in the darkness of space.
