The solar panels will foreseeably go to the back of the roof of the Calderón Theater, on the side that faces the environment of the Molinar riverbed and the Canalejas Viaduct. The area is quite clear, so it receives direct sunlight for much of the day, which will facilitate greater energy production. No specific date has been indicated for the installation of the panels, but it is assumed that it will be short-term. The final budget for the installation, according to the same sources, is 60,000 euros, and after this investment the electrical power through renewable sources installed in the city will amount to 334 kilowatt hours. The project has been included in the 2019 annuity of the Provincial Energy Saving Plan of the Provincial Council.
To this initiative, they add from the City Council, the municipalities that have drawn up the Sustainable Energy Action Plan could take advantage of it. The idea was that they could request subsidies for concrete actions in order to reduce the energy consumption of their public facilities. At the same time, this supposes a modernization for the dependencies, and also generates a significant economic saving in the current expenditure of the municipality. In Alcoy, the grant also includes a fast charging point for electric vehicles in Alameda de Camilo Sesto.
The Councilor for Innovation, Industry and Activities and Digital Society, Jordi Segura, highlights that this action affects “the line of increased savings and energy efficiency” carried out by the City Council, “contributing to sustainable development.” He adds that the implementation of renewable energy sources in municipal offices is one more step in the Smart City strategy. It is, according to the mayor, “one more incentive” to continue betting on a project that “aims to make a more sustainable city”, reducing pollution and carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Other parts of the city with photovoltaic panels installed are, for example, the La Beniata, Cotes Baixes and Santiago Payá industrial estates, each with a power of 10 kilowatt hours. Each of these solar gardens feeds the public lighting network, and the second and third are used to recharge vehicles. Likewise, the Eduardo Latorre sports complex and the Horta Major, Miguel Hernández and Tomàs Llàcer schools also supply electricity through plates on their roofs.
A dozen charging points for vehicles
There are a total of 12 electric vehicle recharging points enabled or that will be put into service in the short term in Alcoy. Several of them allow rapid recharging, such as the two installed on Santo Tomás street, with 50 and 43 kilowatt hours, while others are semi-fast charging, at 22 kilowatt hours, such as the one on Calle Poeta Joan Valls; all three were launched last June. There are about 450 electric or hybrid vehicles in the municipality, a figure that is still very discreet but has increased significantly in recent years.
