Research
“I trust my own immune system. I’ve had it, so I think I’ve built up enough defenses,” her colleague adds. “I test myself for others,” says a young service worker. “But I trust my own body and don’t get vaccinated yet”
For the time being, the government does not want a vaccination obligation and a majority of healthcare employees do not either, as it turned out from research among the EenVandaag Opinion Panel.
Not talked about
Is it talked about on the floor? “No,” says a nurse resolutely. Is it a taboo? “Yeah, maybe… We don’t talk about it anyway.”
However, some relatives of residents do assume that staff have been vaccinated. “I trust it’s all right,” says a man who goes to visit his wife. “If you don’t want to vaccinate, you don’t belong here. Then you should look for another job, I think.”
Complicated
Not only in nursing homes, but also in home care is the discussion, sees Hans Buijning of Zorgthuisnl. “People are still orientating themselves, but we also see people with a religious background who object. And those considerations are valid. But in practice it is complicated.”
He also sees that patients are concerned. Because what if someone does not want to have a nurse who has not been vaccinated? “That is difficult. We are really looking for a little more control over the situation, that we have a little more information about the vaccination status. We are also talking about that with the government.”
