Russia Ready to Mediate in Afghanistan with China, US and Pakistan

The statement was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“We remain committed to the task of establishing peace and stability in the Afghan region so that it does not pose a threat to the region,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov also said Russia was against the idea of ​​allowing Afghan refugees to enter Central Asia, the former Soviet territory that lies between Russia and Afghanistan, or stationing US troops there.

“If you think that any country in Central Asia or elsewhere is interested in being targeted so America can fulfill their initiative, I really doubt anyone needs that,” he told a briefing during a visit to Hungary.

Russia maintains close ties with the former Soviet republics of Central Asia and regards the region as part of its sphere of interest.
