A demonstration against the single tax in Shawinigan

The electoral issue of a single tax managed by Revenu Québec arouses increasingly strong opposition in Shawinigan. A demonstration denouncing the apprehended impacts on the 2,000 jobs of the tax center, renamed the National Center for Verification and Collection, will take place on Saturday.

Organized by the Union of Taxation Employees with the support of the city of Shawinigan and the business community, it will be punctuated by a march to the tax center site and speeches.

“One thing is certain, it will be necessary to demonstrate very clearly to all the political parties in election that the jobs in Shawinigan must remain in Shawinigan and that in no case will we take the chance, however small, that they can be moved to another Canadian province, ”warned Mayor Michel Angers.

The leader of the Bloc Québécois believes that there is no risk since anyway, very few tax returns are now processed in Shawinigan. However, he remains adamant on the issue. “The National Assembly, which is the only one that speaks for Quebec, voted unanimously in favor of the single tax return and we will defend it,” thundered Yves-François Blanchet.

Minister François-Philippe Champagne, against the single tax, lambasted the Bloc leader. “If the member for Beloeil-Chambly who is called a certain Monsieur Blanchet does not want to help us, he does not harm us. Him, we put it down, ”said the Liberal candidate for Saint-Maurice – Champlain in a scathing fashion.

In recent months, the Union of Tax Employees has tried unsuccessfully to get the matter discussed with Yves-François Blanchet. A new attempt was made last week without further results. “I can tell you that we were not very well received. I could even say that we were cavalier. If they (the Bloc) work like that, we don’t work that way. We talk to everyone, ”revealed union advisor Patrick Bertrand.
