National tourism already exceeds the pre COVID data in most communities
The number of national tourists exceeded in July the figures prior to the covid pandemic, that is, those of 2019 in most communities, so most noticeable in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Andalusia, with increases greater than 100% compared to the summer of 2020 in the two archipelagos and Madrid.
The data of international travelers, although they have registered notable increases in all regions, for example of 268% in Madrid and 223% in the Balearic Islands, they are still far from those before the appearance of the coronavirus And that causes the total numbers of people staying in hotels to be still lower than those of July 2019 in all communities.
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has published the Hotel Occupancy Survey for July, which once again highlights the slow but steady recovery of the sector after the collapse of occupation and income caused by the arrival of the virus.
The communities in which national tourism has risen in July last compared to the same month of 2019 are Baleares (15,6%), Catalonia (12,0 %), Andalusia (10,3%), Basque Country (9,6%), Asturias (7,7 %), Valencian Community (5,3%), Galicia (4,2%), Canary Islands (1.7%) and Murcia (1.0%).
On the contrary, this indicator still negative in Madrid (-30,4%), Cantabria (-9,7%), Castile and Leon (-8,6%), The Rioja (-7,9%), Navarra (-7,3%), Estremadura (-5,0%), Aragon (-4.5%) and Castilla la Mancha (-3.0%), in addition to Melilla (-22.8%) and Ceuta (-16,7%).
Regarding foreign tourism, the largest increases compared to July 2020, in addition to those mentioned in Madrid (268%) and the Balearic Islands (223%), correspond to the Canary Islands (154.8%), Catalonia (133.7%) , Galicia (133.0%), Andalusia (120.8%), Asturias (112.8%) and Valencian Community (101.0%).
Compared to July 2019, the difference is greater in Madrid (-69.4%), Catalonia (-63.1%), Canarias (59.9%), Extremadura (59.6%) and Andalusia (59.0 %).
The sum of both data – national and foreign tourists – places Asturias very close to recovering the number of people staying in hotels in the region, since in July of this year it was only 3.7% below the figure for the same month of 2019, while Madrid (-51.0%), the Canary Islands (-41.5%) and the Balearic Islands (-40 , 0%) are the territories that are still further from that goal.
