Activists from Extinction Rebellion block ring 2 at Majorstuen

– Protesters have blocked traffic at Majorstukrysset from Kirkeveien to Suhms gate. The police have set up a barrier and redirected the traffic, the Oslo police tweeted just after 13.30.

According to NTB’s photographer on site, everything went smoothly, but the main entrance could not be used. A small group of protesters entered the building and sat down on the floor in the foyer. A slightly larger group of protesters with banners, about 150 people, gathered outside the building.

Met the Minister of Petroleum

Inside the foyer, the demonstrators met Minister of Petroleum and Energy Tina Bru (H). Their main message is that Norway must stop all oil extraction. Bru says she agrees with their concern, but not with the methods used.

– It is a pity that the protesters resort to civil disobedience, and that this group argues that democracy is the problem and will move power from elected bodies to what they themselves believe is right, Bru says in a written statement.

– I therefore disagree with their instruments, but strongly share the concern about climate change and what it will lead to if we do not succeed in intensifying the fight against this globally. We will never succeed in the fight against climate change if we scrap democracy along the way.

Sharp criticism

The police had been notified in advance of some demonstrations, while others were to take place without warning. On Monday, the police informed NTB that they would not do anything as long as everything went smoothly.

By Thursday afternoon, most of the protesters had left the ministries and moved on to take action in traffic. Among other things, they blocked Ankerbrua, before they lined up at Majorstukrysset.

– We have received confirmation that there are some demonstrators who have lined up at the intersection, so we have sent some crews there, says operations manager Cathrine Sylju to NTB.

The environmental activists have announced a number of actions in Oslo this week and began in Frognerparken on Monday morning.
