NAME Tony Gunawan should not be missed when talking about the legend of Indonesian badminton. Because, he has brought the fragrance of Indonesia’s name in various international tournaments while he is still actively playing badminton. One of the most memorable is his success in winning a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

At that time, Tony Gunawan won a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the men’s doubles sector. His duet with Candra Wijaya managed to produce sweet results to crush all his opponents who were certainly not an easy pair.

Before winning great success as a badminton player, Tony Gunawan certainly went through a career that was not easy. The former badminton player who was born in Surabaya on April 9, 1975, even had a slanted view as a child.

That slanted view was even obtained by Tony Gunawan Gunawan when he was a child. At that time, he was participating in a tournament, then there was a spectator who said he was too fat and not suitable to play badminton.

Besides being with Candra Wijaya, Tony Gunawan has also been paired with Halim Haryanto. This duo won titles in the 1998 Brunei Open, 1998 Malaysia Open, 2001 Singapore Open, 2001 All England, 2001 World Championships, and many others.

The figure of Tony Gunawan then again received more attention from the public after deciding to move to the United States (US) in 2002. There, he became a player and coach at the Orange County Badminton Club because there was no United States Badminton National Team (Timnas).

In 2011, Tony Gunawan then changed citizenship. He became a US citizen. After that, he decided to retire and focus on being a coach in the US.

Even though he has now changed citizenship, Tony Gunawan said he had never betrayed Indonesia. He changed his nationality due to child affairs, taxes, and others. Tony still loves Indonesia. He even always missed his homeland.
