Vincenzo Grifo gave Freiburg the lead with a beautiful free kick after just six minutes, and shortly after the break the home side followed up through Roland Sallai (53rd). Yannik Keitel brought Dortmund closer with his own goal (59th), but in the end they suffered their first defeat in the still young Bundesliga season. At the beginning they had defeated Frankfurt 5: 2, during the week Dortmund had to admit defeat in the Supercup Bayern with 1: 3.
The Frankfurt team came home after clear superiority with a 0-0 against Augsburg to their first point, before the Glasner-Elf had defeats in the DFB Cup and in Dortmund. The former club of the Upper Austrian, VfL Wolfsburg, took first place with their second win in the second game. Xaver Schlager equalized Ridle Baku in the 2-1 away match against Hertha BSC Berlin, Lukas Nmecha provided the late winning goal (88th). In Bielefeld’s 1-1 at Greuther Fürth, Alessandro Schöpf saw yellow-red, Bochum celebrated their first Oberhaus win since February 13, 2010 with a 2-0 win over Mainz.
Glasner exchanges at Frankfurt
Just how much the false start with the Cup and Dortmund defeat unsettled Eintracht and Glasner, just a look at the starting line-up showed. The coach switched from a back three to a back four, and also swapped seeded players like creative man Daichi Kamada or veteran Makoto Hasebe on his five changes. “You can tell that we are still a bit in the discovery phase,” added Glasner, speaking of “a small change”.
What Glasner did was defensive stability. Goalkeeper Kevin Trapp spent a quiet afternoon in the newly formed back four around the Carinthian defense chief Martin Hinteregger. The only drawback was the exploitation of the chances. Augsburg (with Michael Gregortisch from 72.) showed a week after the bitter 0: 4 against Hoffenheim a little better, but is still winless and goalless in the league.
Leverkusen clearly beats Gladbach, Lainer injured himself
In the evening, Leverkusen clearly won the duel between two European Cup contenders: Bayer gave Borussia Mönchengladbach and coach Adi Hütter no chance in a 4-0 (2-0) win. Gladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer (3rd) with an own goal, Patrik Schick (8th), Moussa Diaby (55th) and Nadiem Amiri (87th) ensured the success they deserved with their goals.
Lars Stindl missed a penalty for the guests before the break (43rd), ÖFB legionnaire Stefan Lainer had previously been fouled. The Salzburg full-back injured his right calf and was brought into the cabin with the help of two supervisors. Lainer is suspected of having a broken ankle, so Gladbach and the national team – as well as Sasa Kalajdzic – will be absent for a long time.
Hütter had changed his attack direction compared to the opening draw against champions Bayern Munich and brought with Marcus Thuram and Jonas Hofmann additional momentum and speed into the game over the outside positions. Thuram had to go out again after 20 minutes, ÖFB legionnaire Hannes Wolf came for him. But the offensive accents were mainly set by the hosts, with Julian Baumgartlinger coming on in the 84th minute. “It’s a sobering day anyway. That comes on top of that, ”said Hütter.
