If the blood is red and outside the stool, most likely the problem is in the colon or rectum, e.g. B. with an enlarged prostate, a blockage or a cut in the anus. This condition of fresh red blood on the stool is called hematochezia.
Black, tarry stools are known as melena and can be a sign of serious gastrointestinal problems. Dogs diagnosed with melena should be taken to the veterinarian immediately. Repeated signs of haematochezia or a large amount of fresh blood in the stool should also be checked by a veterinarian. Bring a stool sample with you when you visit the vet to determine the cause.
Treatment options will depend on what is causing the blood in your dog’s stool. A veterinarian will most likely physically examine your dog, examining and testing the stool for parasites, broken bones, bacteria, and viruses. Other procedures may include x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, colonoscopies, and endoscopic exams.
