China may claim to be a model in the fight against the pandemic, several specialists in the country believe that we will have to resolve like other countries to live with the coronavirus. This is what virologist Feng Zijian thinks, interviewed by the weekly Zhongguo Xinwen Zhoukan.
Since July 20, the municipality of Nanjing has announced that it has registered a total of 220 cases of Covid-19 of local origin in just over a week. At the national level, the chain of contamination continues to expand.
Faced with the attacks of the Delta variant, the defense line of our country is broken in places. At the same time, the vaccination rate in China is climbing: as of August 2, it reached 60% for full coverage, with 1.68 billion doses administered nationwide [sur près de 1,4 milliard d’habitants].
How will the epidemic evolve globally? How does China face it again? Feng Zijian, researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was kind enough to answer these questions exclusively for us.
In your opinion, what are the loopholes behind this epidemic outbreak and the warnings that should be drawn from it?
The coronavirus is very contagious. After winning the battle against the epidemic in Wuhan last year, China has recorded around thirty epidemic outbreaks due to imports from abroad, with very diverse modes of transmission.
Their appearance, despite the very strict measures adopted to “Prevent any importation of the virus and epidemic rebound on national soil”, shows how difficult it is to protect yourself against this virus that is spreading everywhere. Indeed, a company is not a precision instrument with perfectly interwoven links.
This time, the transmission was through airport agents responsible for cleaning the plane of a foreign company, infected with the virus left on objects in the cabin by an infected foreign traveler, and which were not detected in time. We therefore need to think about solutions to further improve daily health prevention measures for staff working at border posts, such as cleaning agents.
In addition, with the continuation of the Covid pandemic, the entire planet is faced with a common problem, that of fatigue in the face of the epidemic. If strict measures are easy to apply over a short period, it is not the same in the long term: society and individuals tend to relax their behavior by coping less and less well with certain constraints, such as wearing mask or temperature measurement. In addition, the epidemic poses growing livelihood challenges in many countries or regions. This is a huge challenge; we must therefore do everything to overcome it, but we must also, to a certain extent, understand and accept it.
