JAKARTA – It is recommended to avoid foods and drinks that are added sugar, salt and contain high saturated fat. This intake is not good for the body’s health, especially during recovery Covid-19 .

“In general, the danger that can arise from consuming food with added sugar is a decrease in the ability of the body’s immune cells to eradicate infectious causes such as viruses, so that the body’s immune response is not optimal,” said a clinical nutrition specialist, Dr. Juwalita Surapsari, M.Gizi, SpGK during a webinar with Re.juve, Wednesday (18/8).

He said that as long as pandemic Covid-19 food delivery services are increasing when work from home (WFH) or self isolation (Isoman) . This is because everyone is sending each other food.

“I tried to look for F&B trends in Indonesia, in 2020-2021 it turns out that many people love martabak, besides that there is an interesting fact where every 10 seconds there is an order for a variant of milk tea plus hazelnut syrup,” explained Dr. Juwalita.

According to him, many people who are WFH or isoman need sweetness. In fact, one slice of sweet martabak contains 12 grams of sugar or about 1 tablespoon of sugar. While research in Singapore shows that 500 ml of bubble tea drinks contain 102.5 grams of sugar or 8 tablespoons.

“People tend to have too much sugar. The recommendation for sugar consumption from the Ministry of Health is only 4 tablespoons per person per day. While the 2015 WHO Guidelines, we must be able to limit sugar intake in the form of free sugar either in children or adults, what is recommended is 10% of total energy, “said Dr. Juwalita.

There are several diseases caused by excess sugar. These include obesity, heart and blood vessel disease, diabetes, cavities, tendency to overeating, and inflammation.

“Don’t let the isoman who had mild symptoms turn bad. Consuming a lot of sugar actually weakens the immune system. Sugar needs to be limited even though sugar is part of carbohydrates, but that doesn’t mean limiting all carbohydrates, but sugar that must be limited, “said Dr. Juwalita.
