42 years later, the statue La Patrie en mourning will find the monument to the dead of Saint-Germain-en-Laye located within the National Domain. Created by Charles Barberis (Paris 1888-1980), the work had been removed from its location in 1979 after having been degraded.
Found by a Saint-Germanoise
Until last year, no one seemed to really know where she was. It is thanks to a Saint-Germanoise who wrote to the mayor, to tell him that she thought she had found his trace in the park of the college Debussy, that the City was able to take possession of it and decided to give it a new life.
“It contributes to the heritage enrichment of the town”
“Considering that it contributes to the heritage enrichment of the town, the City decided to restore this sculpture as well as its environment – flame, facings, mosaic – and to reinstall it in the war memorial”,
A cost of € 42,000
The overall cost of this project, which is being finalized, is € 42,000. To carry it out, the City had decided to turn to the departmental council to apply for a grant under the Restoration of historical heritage 2020-2023 mechanism. The latter decided to finance the operation up to € 27,300.
During the discussion of this file in city council, the mayor of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Arnaud Péricard, had indicated that he was particularly close to his heart.
A flame instead of the statue
“We actually found it, damaged it and we carried this project with, in particular, all the memorial associations and veterans. In 1979, when the war memorial was modified, the statue was removed and the flame was set on it. There, we will have a system allowing the statue to find its place and keep this flame. ”
As part of this project aimed at returning the sculpture La Patrie en mourning to its place in the war memorial, the City had also decided to take charge of the manufacture of a missing firepot for an amount of € 4,900 excl. .
The set should be completed by September.
