Berlin / New York (dpa) – Between two renovation projects commissioned by Germany, the British star architect has explained the focus of his work with historical buildings. He’s not just pursuing a formal idea with his team. “Design is not an end in itself. Design is a tool that makes things possible,” said Chipperfield of the German Press Agency in Berlin. “In the case of the Neue Nationalgalerie, the aim was not to bring Chipperfield’s signature into the project, but rather to bring the building back to itself.”
His team spent five years renovating the iconic building by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969). This Sunday the museum will open with three exhibitions.
For the Foreign Office, Chipperfield is now converting the former Goethe House in New York for 20 million euros. He also wants to be careful with historical substance in the representative palace in Manhattan. “We don’t want to realize an architectural project with wonderful rooms, facades or something like that. It’s about opening up the possibilities of the property with the existing building and its goals, so that both come together better.”
The aim is to create a center for transatlantic encounters. “We need more and more opportunities for structured dialogue on issues that are important to us today. It has never been more necessary than it is now,” said Chipperfield.
