FAJAR.CO.ID – Iran is battered by the raging COVID-19 pandemic. As of Thursday (19/8), the death toll from exposure to the virus has exceeded 100,000 people.
Local state TV recorded 564 deaths on Thursday, making the country in the Middle East region even more devastated.
Citing data from Iran’s Ministry of Health, state TV reported that the total infections had reached i 4,587,683. A total of 31,266 of them occurred as the number of exposures since Wednesday (18/8).
“The total number of deaths due to Covid-19 has reached 100,255,” TV reported.
Since Monday, Iran has imposed stricter national restrictions.
Travel restrictions in place and non-essential business closures.
The rapid rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths in recent weeks has forced Iran’s rulers to allow imports of vaccines made by US and British companies.
Whereas in January 2021, both vaccines were banned by Iran’s highest authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in January.
Social media users inside and outside Iran have accused the Islamic Republic’s clerical body of being slow to vaccinate people.
For the record, only about five million of the 83 million population have been fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile Iranian authorities blamed US sanctions for problems in procuring foreign vaccines and delays in deliveries.
