“Great art is definitely a very subjective interpretation of the album title. Of course I was aware of that. Inside, first of all, is my own bipolar stance against this, let’s be honest, unusual occupation that I have chosen to take so seriously here in Latvia. The name is ironic and provocative at the same time. For some, it’s even an accurate description of the album’s content. I didn’t want to say anything in front of anyone. The main thing I wanted was that after listening to this album, everyone would like to ask themselves the question: is it “great art” or not. I am not so much interested in the answers, but rather that every listener will have thought about it at least a little bit. That is a great deal, and it seems to me that I have succeeded. It is very important for a rapist in Latvia that people simply think about it, give up any older notions about it, at least analyze it a little, and hopefully see something more than slang, bravura, rough words and style of dress. I’m sure a lot of people hadn’t heard Great art just because it’s rap and everything is clear about rap – someone is cursing, protesting, shouting, waving their hands, but no one will be ashamed of themselves by listening to something like that. Where else to admit that I liked it. I hope that Great Art and its great success and awards became a reason for someone to study again what is happening in this genre in Latvia. What has it all evolved since you last visited us, “says Ansis.
So as not to accumulate dust
The musician’s previous album, 2017 Balm, like this one, has not experienced a tangible format to put on the shelf at least as a functional souvenir. “I really like discs, cassettes, records, their design, their weight. The way they work still seems to be something more magical than technological. stands unopened on the shelf, collects dust, takes up space – the music is more convenient to put on YouTube, where at the time most local rappers published all their works for free with the release of the album. Already on the platform Bandcamp, which we introduced to local rap fans around 2013, users downloaded the album for the price set by the author and listened to it on their computer, phone or mp3 player. In 2017, analyzing the current trends, it seemed worthwhile to place bets on streaming channels, so I Balm I put only in them. As a result, listeners who wanted to hear it were forced to get to know the world of streaming, to try how it works. Most liked it and felt comfortable, and the risk was justified – Balm became the most streamed Latvian music record of the year. In addition, I managed to gather a list of listeners on these platforms in time, which, I am sure, helped both a couple of years later. Earth hours, though Great art resonance. For those who wanted to buy something tangible and show their support, and “buy” this free album in the more traditional sense, I offer the album in physical format – as a print (Draworgy handmade by movement people) with a unique album download code. Great art I can pretty well imagine it as a record, but this album is unfortunately lengthy in terms of the bulky boundaries of a single record. I also stopped – I didn’t want to squeeze the waxed version of the album, no matter how tempting, nostalgic and close to the hip-hop world the format would be. ”
The vortex of grammar
Back then, in 2017, when it came out Balm, ansis allowed the possibility that it will also remain his best album, so instead of the question of the burden of creating the next record – to fulfill the obligation not to disappoint their listeners. “Beating yourself, yes … It’s probably something I’m worried about more than I’d like. Before. Great art I tried to get myself not to think about any “beat” and just try to do something different than before. More creativity, less sports with yourself. For me, a very useful tool for making creative decisions has been the chaotic setting of “not doing what is expected of me”. At the moment, the way Great Art sounds may seem logical, but after Balm and I heard a lot in the following Earth hours, that now I have no choice, there is only one way forward – to write hits, music, which will also be understood by an ordinary person, whose precious attention I have now received. For a while I thought about it, I even considered the idea of making the next recording for the EP with a few songs that are better than Balm fit into the festival environment and on the big stage. The moment I realized that I was more worried about the format than following what I find compelling and interesting to do, I felt kind of stupid and at that moment I finally started writing. Now he remembers that by the time of his release he had completely lost all objectivity: already ready to defend, saying no need to compare Great art With Balm, because in each album I have tried to do something different, push even more for originality and take risks, hoping that it will not go unnoticed. When I arranged for some of my friends to listen to their unfinished album and see their faces and hear the first comments, it was clear that it was only necessary to polish the last things that do not give me peace of mind, and everything will be fine – it can make people listen. “
