NEW YORK – New York Mets owner Steven Cohen has criticized his team following their fifth straight loss.
“It’s hard to understand how professional hitters can be so unproductive,” Cohen wrote in a tweet Wednesday, the day after a 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants.
“The best teams have a more disciplined approach. The average power and the average presence on the trails do not lie, ”he added.
The Mets, which Cohen acquired during the offseason, occupied the top spot in the National’s East section from May 9 to August 6. However, they lost 14 of their 19 games to drop to 59-60.
Heading into Wednesday’s games, the Mets were third in the National East Division, four and a half games away from the Atlanta Braves and two games from the Philadelphia Phillies. They were six and a half games behind in the race for the passes for the fourth ace game.
Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom hasn’t pitched since July 7 due to stiff forearms.
The Mets hitters have maintained a .232 batting average over the last 13 games, which ranks them 24th in Majors in that period.
The Mets have scored 450 points this season, which is good for the 28th overall in the Majors ahead of just the Texas Rangers (446) and Pittsburgh Pirates (431).
