US Open: Dominic Thiem also has to cancel for New York

Defending champion Dominic Thiem has canceled his participation in the US Open (August 30th to September 12th) this year. The Austrian has to pass because of a wrist injury that has not yet completely healed, as he announced.

Thiem played his last match so far in Mallorca in June, before having failed in the first round of the French Open in Paris. Thiem had already done without the lawn classic at Wimbledon because of the wrist injury.

“After a week on the training ground, I still felt pain in my wrist and knew that I was not at 100 percent,” said Thiem. The Austrian will now undergo conservative treatment over several weeks to give the hand more time to recover.

How fit are Nadal and Djoković?

“I am very disappointed that I am unable to defend my title at the US Open and miss the rest of the season,” said Thiem. But now he wants to give himself all the time and only return to the tour completely fit, said the number six in the world.

Thiem is not the only professional who has to miss the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. Roger Federer recently announced that he would be out for several months. The Swiss will have to undergo knee surgery again and will be out for an indefinite period. The same applies to compatriot Stan Wawrinka, who has not participated in a major tournament for a long time.

The top favorites for the title, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, are also hit. Nadal, who skipped Wimbledon and the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo in the summer, recently had to miss the ATP tournament in Cincinnati due to a foot injury. Djoković, who can do the so-called Grand Slam perfectly in New York, recently complained of shoulder problems and may go to the tournament without match practice.

All of this could suit Alexander Zverev. After winning the gold medal in Tokyo, the German is also considered a candidate for the title at the US Open.
