NEWS ANALYSIS: Joe Biden is in the middle of the biggest crisis so far in the presidency. On Monday afternoon, he spoke to the people after several days of absence.
The collapse in Afghanistan happened “faster than we had imagined”, Biden admitted, but he took no self-criticism.
– I stand by my decision. If anything, developments over the past week have emphasized that it was right to end the US military operation in Afghanistan, Biden said.
The speech was a much-needed attempt to get on the offensive again for a pressured president.
Most things went smoothly for Biden in his first half year in the White House, but through the summer it started to weed in several areas.
