Robots that do parkour? Boston Dynamics has done it

Today Boston Dynamics presented a video on its YouTube channel where it shows two of its Atlas robots, performing a circuit with various obstacles, with various stunts and jumps.

“For the first time today, both Atlas robots have successfully completed the complex obstacle course,” the company mentioned in a press release.

The Atlas robotic prototype is a research platform designed to overcome the limits of whole body mobility; recently the company also featured a video of the robots dancing to a choreography.

The company seeks to recreate as many scenarios as possible of a human being and for Atlas to successfully complete them. At the moment they have no plans to commercialize the humanoid robot; however, they have other products that are available on the market.

“Humanoids are interesting from a couple of perspectives […] They capture our vision of a robot of the future that adapts anywhere. They may not be the best design for a particular task, but if you want to build a platform that can perform a wide variety of physical tasks, we already know that a human form factor is capable of doing that, ”said Scott Kuindersma, senior scientist at company research.

Boston Dynamics, an American company dedicated to the creation and production of robots to facilitate various tasks for human beings, has developed various products such as Spot (a small robot similar to a dog) or Strech and Pick, which facilitate assembly and production in a company .

The development of Atlas, seeks to be a prototype for the development of the other products of the company. “Ultimately, pushing the limits of a humanoid robot like Atlas drives hardware and software innovation that translates to all of our robots at Boston Dynamics,” the company added.

In the last 5 years, Boston Dyamics has focused on developing, investing and producing technology that can be a tool for the human being. In June this year, Hyundai acquired the company to join the technology development.

Robotics technology has been on the rise in recent years, various companies focus on developing a robot that manages to coexist with human beings on a daily basis. Recently, Xiaomi presented its CyberDog, a robot that plans to be the “perfect” companion of the human being.

“I find it difficult to imagine a world 20 years from now where there are no capable mobile robots that move gracefully, reliably and work alongside humans to enrich our lives. But we are still in the early days of creating that future. Kuindersma added.
