JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – Former Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) said he was surprised the Taliban was able to take control of Afghanistan so quickly. He also revealed the Taliban’s strategy to seize power.
He knows this Taliban strategy because he often encourages peace between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
Jusuf Kalla has also been invited to meet the Afghan government and the Taliban. In December 2020, he met President Ashraf Ghani with his ministers.
“President Ashraf Gani invited me to meet them and all their officials, to ask for my views and advice, what solutions can be achieved to achieve peace,” said JK in Sapa Indonesia Malam Kompas TV, Monday (16/8/2021).

Then, in January 2021 he met representatives of the Taliban in Doha, Qatar. At that time, he pushed the Taliban to reach a ceasefire agreement with the Afghan government.
“The Taliban reject the ceasefire. He said, ‘Wait for the realization of America’s return’, “said JK.
According to JK, the refusal actually shows the Taliban are smart. They already had a strategy to control Afghanistan at that time.
“So it’s a strategy that benefits the Taliban. They are smart, negotiate America first. The Americans just returned home and they took over all of Afghanistan,” JK explained.
Prior to the power struggle, Jusuf Kalla had contacted President Ashraf Ghani to ask about Afghanistan.
