Great atmosphere at the first season game of the regional soccer team Kickers Offenbach, but “only” 4501 spectators. “You don’t have to be afraid with us in the stadium,” says President Joachim Wagner.

Offenbach – Joachim Wagner was torn. On the one hand, the president of the regional soccer division Kickers Offenbach still raved about the atmosphere almost 45 minutes after the final whistle of the opening game against Homburg (“Outstanding”), on the other hand he would have wished for “a little more” spectators. According to official information, it was 4501.

League best of the day (the other eight games of the Südwest-Gruppe only came to 4633 spectators) and the largest backdrop at OFC since November 1, 2019 (5995 against Alzenau). Back then, however, the Kickers were not a contender for the title. So it’s no wonder that your own expectations – despite Corona – are different.

Of course it’s vacation time. However, the season tickets (around 3000) are counted regardless of whether the holder is in the stadium. Then what was it? “The back and forth was certainly not beneficial,” says Wagner, referring to the latest changes to the stadium rules. “But neither the city nor we can do anything about that. In Offenbach, the incidence first passed the 35 and then the 50 mark within two days. We had hoped that that would be the case against Ulm at the earliest. ”It is possible that some fans had stayed at home due to the pandemic. Wagner understands that, but also says: “You don’t have to be afraid with us in the stadium.”

The restriction of viewer capacity to 6200, which was sometimes heavily criticized in fan circles, did not turn out to be a problem – not even with a view to the background noise. “It felt like a lot more,” said Wagner. Especially at the beginning of the game the mountain shook. “We let ourselves be carried away,” said goalkeeper and captain Stephan Flauder. “The mood was great. That was really fun ”, added flicker Serkan Firat and expressed the hope that“ everything will remain stable in terms of corona ”. (By Christian Düncher)

Homburg’s trainer Wenzel is sorry for “freaking out”

Offenbach – Timo Wenzel is “not someone who offends”. This finding was important to the FC Homburg coach after the game at OFC. Still, he had seen red. His already warned player Mart Ristl – plowed by two Offenbachers – fell on the ball and held the game device: yellow-red (88th). Wenzel kicked angrily (“I would have liked the referee to have a sure instinct”) against a water bottle and was expelled from the interior. He later apologized for the “freaking out”. (cd)
