1. FC Cologne – Hertha BSC 0: 1
Tor: 0: 1 Jovetic (6.)
Mainz also had a minute’s silence for the deceased Gerd Müller before the game against Leipzig. A few minutes later, Mainz captain Moussa Niakhaté gave the hosts an early lead (13th). And, surprisingly, it should be enough for the FSV, who is plagued by numerous corona-related failures. With the defeat, the new RB coach Jesse Marsch failed to make their debut in the Bundesliga. His team was unable to convert their sometimes oppressive superiority against the passionately defending hosts in front of 10,500 spectators into goals.
Stuttgart as if unleashed
Stuttgart captain Wataru Endo brought VfB to 1-0 with his goal
–
VfB Stuttgart started the new Bundesliga season with a runaway victory and greet them from the top of the table. The team of coach Pelligrino Matarazzo leaves a completely overwhelmed climber from Fürth no chance in the 5-0 success. At halftime, the Swabians are 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Wataru Endo (30th) and Philipp Klement (36th). In the second half, VfB even shifted up a gear and gave the newly promoted three more goals from Marc-Oliver Kempf (55th / 76th) and Hamadi Al Ghaddioui. Shortly before the final whistle, Jamie Leweling ensures the consolation goal for the guests and the final score. Stuttgart celebrates the perfect start to the season, Fürth has hit the hard ground of Bundesliga reality after the last-minute promotion in the preseason.
Wolfsburg versus Riemann
Weghorst hits the “golden gate” of the day
–
This only applies to a limited extent for fellow promoters VfL Bochum. It is true that after eleven years of absence from the Bundesliga, the Ruhr Area Club has to acknowledge the clear superiority of the opponent from Wolfsburg. But VfL did a lot better with the Champions League participants – especially defensively. And the adventure back to the Bundesliga starts badly for Thomas Reis’ team: Robert Tesche clears the ball after a header with his hand on the line, referee Frank Willenborg gives red for the video images Bochum and a penalty for Wolfsburg, which Wout Weghorst forgives against Manuel Riemann, who dived quickly (5th) – it should be the duel of the game. Because the Bochum goalkeeper thwarts the best chances throughout the game and keeps his team, which is having a hard time on the offensive after being sent off, in the game for a long time. He only has no chance against goal scorer Weghorst once (22nd minute), which is enough for VfL to win this afternoon.
Haaland show in Dortmund
Title contender Borussia Dortmund started the season on Saturday evening with a convincing victory across the board. BVB finished Eintracht Frankfurt 5-2 (3-1) and gave their new coach Marco Rose a successful league debut. Outstanding once again: striker Erling Haaland, who hits twice in front of 25,000 spectators (34th / 70th) and is involved in all three other hits by Reus (23rd), Hazard (32nd) and Reina (58th) as a template. Five scorer points after a Bundesliga matchday, 62 goals in 61 BVB games – Haaland will also set standards in 2021/22. Felix Passlack’s own goal (27th) and the goal from new signing Jens Petter Hauge (86th) are on the credit side of Eintracht, who are inferior in all respects today.
Lull after early goals
Bayer Leverkusen missed a perfect start to the season with new coach Gerardo Seoane’s Bundesliga debut. At Union Berlin, the ambitious Werkself have to be content with a hard-fought 1-1 (1-1). The Berliners, who will play in the play-offs of the new Conference League on Thursday with Finnish representative Kuopio PS, will take the lead thanks to Taiwo Awoniyi (7th), who was signed by Liverpool FC in the summer. But Leverkusen lied by Moussa Diaby (12th) to equalize quickly. But then the game flattens out, the Swiss coaching duel between Seoane and Unions Urs Fischer remains in the stadium at An der Alten Försterei despite the rapid initial phase with the first two goals of the Bundesliga afternoon without a winner.

First away win of the season
It looks like a close affair in Augsburg for a long time, where Hoffenheim has been leading since the 37th minute through the goal of Jakob Buun Larssen. But instead of equalizing for Markus Weinzierl’s team, the goals fall on the other side: Adamyan (78th), Rutter (87th) and Rudy (90th + 5) score a victory that is perhaps a bit too high. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß and his team, who will be the first to celebrate an away win this season, will not care.
Arminia Bielefeld and SC Freiburg also provide a season premiere: The teams of Frank Kramer and Christian Streich do not score any goals and thus ensure the first 0-0 of the new season.
Bayern only draw
Master Bayern Munich could not win the first Bundesliga game under the new coach Julian Nagelsmann. In Mönchengladbach there was only a 1: 1 for the record champions. The early Gladbach lead by Plea (10th) was able to make up for striker Robert Lewandowski before half-time (42nd), but the champions did not score the winning goal in front of around 23,000 spectators on the Lower Rhine.

Closer to it was sometimes the host, who had demanded penalties in two tricky scenes in the final phase of the game, but was refused by referee Tobias Fritz, who did not look at the scenes again on the screen. For Bayern, which failed several times against Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, it was the second draw in the ninth Bundesliga opening game in a row after the 2-2 draw against Hertha BSC at the start of the 2019/20 season. In the previous one, the record champions shot the later relegated Schalke 04 8-0 out of their own stadium.
