Britney Spears will finally be free. Her father has agreed to relinquish custody of her daughter, Reuters reports.
After about a year of litigation, the pop star’s father has finally agreed to relinquish his daughter’s guardianship, which includes control over her life and finances.
For about 13 years, Jamie has been the guardian of the daughter and controlled her life. In 2008, Spears’ father became the daughter’s guardian because she had experienced a very difficult period in her life. In 2007, the singer experienced a mental breakdown.
Under the supervision of the singer’s father, Spears’ finances were spent all these years, and he made decisions related to music recording, concert tours, television appearances and other projects.
After a long public solicitation of the singer and lawsuits, the father has finally agreed to terminate the guardianship, so that the singer will be able to manage his own finances.
“We are pleased that Mr Spears and his lawyer today acknowledged that the application for custody should be withdrawn,” said pop star lawyer Matthew Rosengart.
The pop star had been trying to persuade her father for several months that he would no longer interfere in or control her life. As the peaceful talks failed, it was planned that a regular court hearing would take place in September this year, at which the judge would decide whether guardianship needed to continue.
A court document released today, August 13, said Jamie Spears was ready to resign. It is not yet known exactly when Britney’s father’s term will end, as the document submitted to the court did not specify a specific date on which it could take effect.
Jamie has said he is ready to work with both the court and his daughter’s lawyer.
Meanwhile, a British lawyer has called this a great victory.
“A significant victory for Britney Spears, this is another step towards justice.”
The singer’s lawyer mentions that even if Spears’ father is quite persistent with regard to custody and its termination, he is still not interested in fighting for his justice in public.
Although Britney admits that her father’s control over finances interferes with her normal life, Jamie said in a document filed with the court that she never opposed her daughter’s interests and forced her to do nothing against her own will.
We have already reported that Britney Spears ’guardian, father, is still concerned about her mental health.
Jamie Spears told the court that Jody Montgomery, who is in charge of the singer’s personal and medical affairs, had informed her in early July that Spears was misusing medication.
