Every year on August 15 we celebrate the Blessed Virgin in a new style. In the old style, the holiday falls on August 28.

The word “sleep” means a peaceful end. On this day, Christians celebrate the ascension of the Mother of God to heaven and her union with God.
Assumption of the Mother of God symbolizes the end of the earthly life of the Holy Mother of God – Mother of Jesus Christ.
According to legend, three days before her death, the Mother of God had a vision. An archangel Gabriel appears before her, warning her of the beginning of her heavenly life. As a confirmation of his presence and the authenticity of what he said, he gave her a palm branch.
On the day he indicated, the apostles preaching in different countries gathered in Jerusalem to say goodbye to the Mother of God and bury her. And Jesus Christ himself, accompanied by the souls of the righteous, angels and archangels, descended to earth to take the body and soul of the Mother of God, as she wished to see him before leaving this world.
The Virgin Mary was buried in a cave near Gethsemane, whose entrance was closed with a large stone. Only the apostle Thomas was late for the funeral. Arriving later, he sees only the shroud of the resurrected Mother of God.
Significance of the feast of the Assumption
To many people, celebrating the day of God’s mother’s death may seem strange because it is associated with sorrow, pain, and loss. But the Christian faith sees death as a test that everyone must go through to secure eternal life. Accordingly, the Assumption of the Mother of God is considered a holiday, not an occasion for sorrow, because on this day the Mother of God reunites with her son.
Traditions of the Great Mother of God
On the Assumption of the Mother of God, Christians must go to church. In the past, the seeds and wheat ears of the new harvest were consecrated on this holiday.
In the church you should light a candle for all your relatives, as well as pray for the health of your closest people, especially children. On this day, candles are lit for the deceased relatives. The women bring gifts to the church – ritual cakes, towels, flowers and leave money for health.
The Holy Mother of God is the protector of mothers, pregnant women, children and the family hearth. That is why on this day prayers to her are offered by women who cannot conceive, mothers, unmarried girls and anyone who seeks healing or a solution to their life problems. It is good to spend the night before August 15 in a temple with the name of the Mother of God. It is believed that the sick recover after doing so.
The day is suitable for giving a sacrifice for health and fertility, for gathering with the family.
In our country in the church “Assumption”, in the Arbanassi monastery “Holy Mother” is one of the miraculous icons of the Mother of God. Childless women who pray to her then conceive.
People from all over the country worship the Great Mother of God in front of this icon. According to the belief, the miracle comes only to those who see the miraculous icon of the Mother of God early in the morning.
Traditionally, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary should have a festive cake made of consecrated flour, boiled wheat, corn and chicken. It is mandatory to consume watermelon and grapes on this day.

What cannot be done on the Assumption of the Mother of God?
On the Great Mother of God, avoid quarrels, especially with your family and close friends. Do not refuse help to anyone – try to help anyone who asks you for it.

Superstitions associated with the Assumption
Our ancestors believed that we should not walk on this barefoot, especially on the dew-covered grass, which is a symbol of the tears of the Blessed Virgin. Therefore, walking through it, one can get sick and unhappy.
Old or uncomfortable shoes should not be worn on this day. Otherwise, your future life will be filled with various difficulties and problems.
Early in the morning of the Assumption, unmarried girls should not talk to anyone. Before doing so, they must wash their faces with cold water, saying the following words three times: “Most Holy Mother of God, you have crowned all, united families, help me to find my bridegroom. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. ! “
