Right-hander Corbin Burnes struck out 10 in a row to tie the major league record and led the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-0 beating victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.
Burnes, selected to the All-Star Game this year for the first time, finished with 15 fans, the most of his life, in eight episodes, on a hot night at Wrigley Field.
Burnes’ 10 strikeouts during his streak came with the swing of his opponents for the third strike.
The 26-year-old pitcher tied the record set by Hall of Famer and New York Mets Tom Seaver, who struck out 10 in a row against San Diego in 1970. Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola matched the feat against the Mets on June 25.
Burnes struck out all three of his opponents in the second, third and fourth inning to set a Milwaukee record with nine fans in a row. In the beginning of the fifth, he sentenced Schwindel before his next opponent, Matt Duff, singled on the first pitch.
It was just Chicago’s second hit.
Burnes (7-4) allowed four hits, did not walk and won his fifth straight decision.
The loss went to Jake Arrieta (5-11).
For the Brewers, Willy Adames 5-2 with a run scored. Venezuelans Eduardo Escobar 5-2 with one scored, Omar Narváez 3-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs.
For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 3-1, Robinson Chirinos 1-0, Willson Contreras 2-0. The Dominican Sergio Alcántara 1-0.
