The Italian island of Sicily may have recorded the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe at 48.8 degrees Celsius. The regional authorities have reported this reading, which must now be checked by the World Meteorological Organization.
According to the organization, the current official record in Europe is 48 degrees Celsius, recorded in Athens, Greece, in 1977.
The latest heat wave in Italy is caused by an anticyclone nicknamed Lucifer moving from Africa.
Lucifer is predicted to travel north across mainland Italy, further raising temperatures in cities, including the capital, Rome.
The Italian Ministry of Health has already issued a “red” warning for extreme heat in several regions of Italy.
