“When it comes to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries, there is direct communication and understanding of how to deal with Iran,” Frej said in an interview with Al-Hurra, an Arabic language channel funded by the United States (US) government.

Asked for more information on the nature of the direct contact, Frej declined to elaborate. He said it was outside the scope of his office.

Frej said the Regional Cooperation portfolio deals with Arab countries that share normalization agreements with Israel.

Saudi Arabia has no official relations with Israel. But two of his close regional partners, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, normalized relations with Israel last year.

Former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu allegedly visited Saudi Arabia last November to hold secret discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. However, the Saudi government denied the meeting publicly.

But Riyadh, and in particular Mohammad bin Salman, which has sought to overhaul the Kingdom’s vision, has reportedly considered public relations with Israel in recent years. Both Israel and Saudi Arabia are sworn enemies of Iran, which they see as a threat to regional stability.
