The fight for direct mandates: who votes what? | Regional

Of: D. Puskepeleitis

Hannover – The polls ahead of the federal election go on a roller coaster. It’s hard to predict which party will come out on top in the end. That is why every direct mandate won is all the more important. But the fight for direct debit is more exciting this year than it has been in a long time.

Four years ago, the CDU won 16 direct mandates in Lower Saxony, the SPD 14. A month and a half before the election, there are at least eight constituencies in which the outcome is completely open.

The election portal election.de calculates the applicants’ chances. “It is the first federal election in which the Greens play such a prominent role,” says election.de boss Matthias Moehl.

But even well-known top politicians have to face tough duels:

► Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) competes head-to-head with Ingrid Pahlmann (CDU) in the Gifhorn / Peine constituency. While the pollsters from INSA see the SPD just ahead, election.de recognizes a tendency towards the CDU.

► Identical situation in the south of the region (Hannover Land 2). There SPD parliamentary deputy Matthias Miersch has to fear for his direct mandate. CDU challenger: JU federal chief Tilman Kuban.

► The race in Hildesheim, Helmstedt / Wolfsburg and Göttingen is completely open: There election.de sees a high probability that the SPD will not be able to defend its constituencies.

► In Lüchow-Dannenberg / Lüneburg, CDU member Eckhard Pols threatens to lose the constituency to Julia Verlinden (Greens). It would then be the only direct mandate for the Greens in the country.

Moehl expects an exciting final spurt: “There is still a lot that can change in the national trend. But a lot can also happen in the constituencies. “
