The leader of the Norwegian Society for Nature Conservation, Terje Gulowsen, was present when the UN report was presented on Monday. He points out that the UN has published reports on the state of the climate for the past 30 years, and that the new report “confirms exactly what the scientists said 30-40 years ago”.
– This is a scandal. Norwegian politicians have completely failed when it comes to stopping climate change. This shows the emissions trend, and we have a huge oil industry that the largest political parties believe will continue to grow, says Gulowsen.
On Monday, Minister of Climate and Environmental Protection Sveinung Rotevatn praised Norwegian climate policy, and points out that Norway has had a reduction in emissions over the past five years. It makes the Nature Conservation Association sneeze.
– We are extremely dependent on fossil fuels and emissions have hardly decreased since we started talking about this here in 1990.
Gulowsen says he is now afraid that Norwegian politicians “will continue to talk about climate without doing what is needed”.
– Then the consequences will be terrible. Both in Norway, but especially in the rest of the world.

Climate choice
The Norwegian Society for Nature Conservation hopes that the UN climate report and this summer’s natural disasters around the world can contribute to climate becoming a top issue in the upcoming election campaign. They have therefore created a kind of climate voting machine.
– Here it emerges that it is the small, traditional environmental parties that come out best. If you are seriously concerned about the climate, you should stay away from the Progress Party, the Conservatives, the Center Party and the Labor Party, says Gulowsen.
He believes Norway’s most important climate cut will be “to stop looking for new oil and gas”.
– And to restructure the oil sector to become a sustainable sector. The parliamentary election is in a few weeks. Then those who care about the climate must choose the parties that take the climate seriously.
