In the autumn it should be possible to administer an infusion with antibodies to high-risk patients, such as the elderly, who are infected with the corona virus in order to drastically reduce the chance of hospitalization. That’s what virologist Johan Neyts of KU Leuven said on Canvas on Friday in Terzake.
“The good news is that a number of therapies are coming up in the fall that produce antibodies that are then infused,” Neyts said. “Clinical studies show that if this happens within 5 days of the start of the first symptoms of a corona infection, you then have about an 80 percent reduction in hospital admission. It would be ideal to do this with frail people such as the elderly if there is an outbreak in a residential care center, which could have an impact on the further evolution of the condition.”
A third shot will also be necessary, according to Neyts, partly because at-risk patients such as the elderly often received their first two shots at the beginning of 2021 and because their immune system reacts less vigorously to the corona vaccine anyway.
