Sylvie recently had the honor to chat with the royal couple during their state visit to Germany. “They are so warm. I was very nervous but I felt so honoured.” It was not the first time she spoke to Queen Máxima. Ten years earlier, when she was still married to former football player Rafael van der Vaart, she suddenly got Máxima on the phone after a lost match. Sylvie was seriously ill during this period and Rafael passed the phone on to her.

“It still gives me goosebumps,” she says. “My heart was racing. And she was so sweet. She said, ‘Sylvie, we followed your story that you had breast cancer. And we are so proud of how you are dealing with that. Keep it up, be strong. ‘ That meant the world to me, that she said that.'” It was a moment that she says she will never forget.
