Five passengers from the cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam died during an excursion with a plane in Alaska. The pilot was also killed. The seaplane crashed into the forested mountain area of Misty Fjords National Monument.
The cause of the accident is unknown. The US Coast Guard found the wreckage. The identity of the victims has not been released.
The Holland-America Line shipping company has confirmed that the victims were passengers of the Nieuw Amsterdam. The excursion was not arranged through the shipping company.
Departure ship postponed
The Nieuw Amsterdam is docked in Ketchikan, in southeastern Alaska. Ketchikan is a popular cruise ship destination. The ship’s departure has been postponed due to the accident.
The ship can accommodate about 2100 passengers. The Holland-America Line was originally a Dutch shipping company. Since 1989, the cruise business has been owned by the British-American cruise company Carnival.
