The messaging app on the iPhone will use a built-in machine that will be able to notify the company of abuse images, but without private communication being revealed, Apple states.
Several researchers the news agency AP has spoken to, however, fear that the authorities may use the tool for other purposes, such as going after dissidents or protesters.
John Clark, who heads the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, says the new tool changes everything.
“With so many people using Apple products, these new safety measures are potentially life-saving for children,” he says.
