“For many students, the transition from secondary education to higher education is a big step. Starting a study in times of corona is challenging, and moreover, more and more independence and initiative are expected from students. With this program we can provide prospective students with the right guidance at the start of their studies,” says Rector Magnificus Frank van der Duijn Schouten.
Connection with the university
More than 750 first-year bachelor students who prepare themselves optimally for their studies are following the Pre Academic Program (PAP), which has been offered since 2013. Participants in this program on average obtain a higher grade for their very first exams and have a good chance of successfully completing the first year of study because communication with fellow students and lecturers is better and students experience more bonding with the university.
Program unique in the Netherlands
The program goes beyond getting to know each other and is unique in the Netherlands in this size. In a few weeks, students follow intensive workshops and lectures, digitally and on campus. They learn to use their own talents to the best of their ability to study successfully, thereby preparing them for their professional future. There is also a lot of attention for getting to know fellow students and for ‘feeling at home’ at the university. Since the corona pandemic, personal contact has been very difficult, making a good bond with the university, fellow students and lecturers all the more important. The program has now started and the first sessions have been rated by the participants with marks between 8 and 9.
