The Space Station Had A Heavy Incident, Why?

A computer error caused problems on the ISS.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The International Space Station (ISS) experienced one of the worst incidents in history. A computer system error is reported to have occurred and caused problems aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Reported The Weather Network, on July 29, a new section of the ISS arrived and docked at the end of the Russian orbital outpost, named Nauka. Nauka is Russia’s Multipurpose Laboratory Module.

A few hours after his arrival, the Russian cosmonaut checked the connections Science to all stations, pusher (thrusters) from Nauka’s section suddenly shot. This thruster makes the gas flow emitted continuously. Nauka begins to push the ISS out of alignment, causing the station to fall from end to end as it orbits the planet.

When the incident occurred, the ISS crew, as well as Roscosmos along with the American Space Agency (NASA) worked quickly to bring the situation under control. First of all, Roscosmos activates a boost on the Zvezda Service Module (which is in the opposite position) in an attempt to counterbalance the push from Nauka.

The propulsion cargo ship Progress 78 was anchored and Zvelda was on the opposite side of Nauka. Roscosmos said that this problem occurred due to a short-term software failure that caused the module engine to work incorrectly.

NASA initially reported that the ISS was thrown only about 45 degrees from its position by the Nauka thrusters. However, later this report was confirmed, it became a bit more after they assessed the incident afterwards.

NASA’s Zebulon Scoville said that an unexpected push caused the station to perform backflip slow. At about half a degree per second, the ISS made a total turn of 540 degrees before being stopped by Zvezda and Progress 78.

From there, with still no way to turn off the uncontrollable thrusters, they just had to wait until Nauka ran out of fuel.

By the time this incident ended, the orbital lab the size of a football field was flipped end to end, up to one and a half times which was a non-ideal situation. Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said this was one of the more serious incidents in the ISS’ 24-year history.

“The loss of attitude control in principle risks a complicated breakdown,” McDowell said.

The current incident is over. The ISS crew has successfully accessed Nauka and integrated it into the station. According to NASA, Nauka will serve as a new science facility, docking port, and space airspace for future operations.
