Being non-binary means according to RFSL:s definition not to identify as male or female – but instead between, beyond or as both gender categories.
Now Canadian Quinn is writing Olympic history, as the first pronounced non-binary athlete to take an Olympic medal.
It will become gold or silver in the Olympic final in football against Sweden on Friday.
– I’m so proud of my team, Quinn says according to Canadian CBC.
– They are my best friends, and I am so happy that we come home with something other than a bronze (Canada has twice in a row finished third in the Olympics).
The midfielder who belongs to the American Olympics Reign came out as a trans person last fall, after six years in the national team under the name Rebecca Quinn. Hen now only calls himself Quinn, has played in Vittsjö in the damallsvenskan and also in the French league, and is expected to start against Sweden in the Olympic final.
In the ongoing Olympics in Tokyo The Canadian national team midfielder was the first open trans person to compete in an Olympic game when football kicked off the sports party. Since then, too weightlifter Laurel Hubbard (New Zealand), who has undergone gender reassignment treatments, and non-binary skateboarder Alana Smith (USA) competed – without reaching the podium.
“I do not know how to feel”, Quinn – who prefers to be referred to by a gender-neutral pronoun – wrote in a post on Instagram.
“I feel proud to see the name ‘Quinn’ in the starting eleven and on my accreditation. I feel sad that so many Olympic athletes before me have not been able to live a life of truth because of what the world looks like. I feel optimistic about change. Change of rules, structures and way of thinking. But most of all, I know the reality: Trance girls who are stopped from playing sports. Trans women who face discrimination and prejudice when trying to achieve their Olympic dreams. The fight is not even close to being over … I will celebrate when we are all here. ”
